Complete Sticks – from their origins with Native Americans, to the present day

Lacrosse originated with the Native American peoples before the 17th century. They built their own one-piece sticks from the start, using wood. They then created the net from hand-made natural cords and strings. . That was the birth of the „Complete Stick“. Separate heads and shafts were yet to come. Nowadays, of course, it’s possible to buy heads and shafts separately, and the benefits that choice brings for the complete stick are clear.

Complete Sticks - probably the easiest way to buy your gear

The ELF (European Lacrosse Federation) has a number of rules to pay attention to before you buy your new stick. Men’s Complete Lacrosse Sticks for attackers should measure about 40,5 inches – just over a metre in length. In contrast, a defender’s Complete Stick should be 70,5“ (about 1,80m) long, and men’s Goalie Sticks can be found right between the two at up to 55,1“ or about 1,40m long. The diameter should not exceed 3,5“ (ca. 8,9cm).

Men's Lacrosse Shafts – Metal, Composite or Wood?

The differences between shafts are mainly caused by the materials used, which influence handling, grip and weight. Players need to be able to run quickly and dodge well while carrying the ball in their Complete Stick, and the performance characteristics of the shaft should help players to have perfect control at all time. Aluminium Shafts for example, offer a good combination of hardness and light weight. On the other hand, Titanium Alloy Shafts are even better because they are more durable. This means that they can stand up better to the physical forces involved in the game. With an alloy shaft you can combine the best properties of the individual metals. These are the shafts with the lowest weight and extremely high strength. Some manufacturers coat their shafts with substances that increase grip, giving the shaft a special feel. Wooden shafts are back in fashion, under the motto: “Back to the roots! “. However, you should always consider the possible disadvantages in terms of curvature, weight and grip. Men's Lacrosse Heads – Onset or Offset?

With a men’s lacrosse head there are many things you need to know. For example an Offset or “Forward Cant” Head, drops away slightly at the point where the head and shaft come together at the throat, so that the ball sits even more deeply in the pocket. This will give you better ball control, plus faster and more precise passing and shooting. In comparison, an Onset Head sits “straight” on the Shaft. With that sort of head, beginners can learn the basics of playing lacrosse more quickly, although as Onset heads are very similar to their cousins from days gone by, they can be a little more difficult to play with compared to an Offset head.

Stiffness vs. Flexibility – what is best?
A stiffer head makes it possible to check harder and more effectively, which can be very useful for men’s lacrosse, while a softer head makes it easier to pick up groundballs.

Narrow or wide? – which is best?
A tighter head gives you greater control over the ball while minimising the area of attack for the opponent. With a wider head however, you have a larger catching area and should also be able to make more pass interceptions around the crease.
