It used to be normal to make a lacrosse shaft out of aluminum material. Depending on the playing position, shafts can be of different lengths

In lacrosse, a distinction is made between attackers, defenders and goalies, who all need different shafts. Attack players have to be very mobile and agile, and a shaft that is too long would get in the way – that’s why Lacrosse Attack shafts are the shortest of the breed, with a length of about 30”, which is the equivalent of approximately 76 cm. Defenders, however need a much longer lacrosse shaft to fend off an opponent’s attacks, so they have the longest lacrosse shafts with a length of 60”, i.e. about 1.50 m. Lacrosse defence shafts are often quite heavy because of their length. Lacrosse goalie shafts for the goalkeepers among male lacrosse players have a standard length of 40”, i.e. approx. 1 m.
